Some words with Operator Six

Operator Six is one of the band I know for a long time, Having an interview with them was important. At the occasion of the release of their new single, they kindly accepted to answer to some questions....

First of all, can you introduce yourself and the band?

We are Operator six

Adam Boyce Vocals / guitar
Alex Boyce guitar
Darren (Deeps) Akeroyd bass
Ian Atkinson Drums

How did you all met and how does the idea to create this band came to your mind(s)?
Ian and 'Deeps' met at school and have been friends since the age of 4, then Alex met them at college. Adam then completed the line-up after leaving his old band

You choose to name the band "Operator Six", why?
We make an effort to never answer that question. it means what you want it to mean .

You've been in different bands before getting together, were you playing the same kind of music?
No the sounds were very different. Alex Deeps and Ian's old band was a hevier  but all have common ground we all like and we wanted to come together to make something more mature and melodic

Do you write the songs all together?
Adam will write the song on piano or acoustic guitar and bring it practice, then we'll all help arrange it and put our parts to it

How do you find the inspiration?
Inspiration comes in many forms. Anything from watching TV to strolling down the road, and especially listening to a wide range of music

Ian, your dad seems to be really involved in the band, does his studio like your second home?
With it being our own studio, we've managed to make it really comfortable for us, so we basically just sit around, but it really nice to have a base, we are very lucky

Have you always wanted to be a musician? Was it your "ideal job" when you were young?
We all wanted to be musicians, thats the drive behind the band.

Do you have an idol/hero in the music industry?
No one person or band in particular, just who ever we are listening to at that time. We've all got individual tastes which helps gives us a unique sound, we like bands that are real and don't have an image over substance, its all about great tunes

You were support band for The Riffles, Ocean Color Scene and even Paul Weller. How did you have this opportunity to support such big artists?
Our manager has made it possible for these artists to hear our recordings and they have given us great feedback and they invite us to support them at there gigs

What are you best memories with them?
Being invited down to Paul Wellers studio and him being interested in what we're doing is amazing, also getting to travel around and see new placed and meet new people

Thanx to those gigs, you could have played in differents part of Europe, is there a place that you really love?
Two nights in Amsterdam with Paul Weller was amazing, and touring with the Rifles was good as we get on with them well.we hope to do more in Europe over the next year, we would love to visit Paris, and other major european cities, the weather is allot better over there ha ha

Is there a town/city where you never been (for a gig) and would love to go? And why?
somewhere further away like New York. or different places in america China Australia, just to take in the culture and see what the response to our music would be like

Whats your biggest dream for the band?
To have a Long and successful career and be creative and progress, make enough money to be able to do this for as long as we can.

Personally, Im quite addicted to your songs "every single way" and "Talisman". Do you have a favorite one, a lucky song?
Everytime we write a new song it becomes our favourite,  but there are certain songs we know will go down well at gigs. We have a song called 'The Realist' that always gets a good response.

On your song "Born to be King", you've played with Elizabeth Denver. If you could pick someone to play with you or sing with you, who would you choose?
obviously we would always like to collaborate with the 'legends' in music,  bob dylan would be pretty cool, Ian would like to work with Ahmir Khalib Thompson who is the drummer from THE ROOTS, he is also a producer and he gets an amazing sound from live bands

Do you have another passion than music?
we all have our individual interests really, some of us are into football, snowboarding, poker and most importantly drinking!!

Would you love to have a "special" director or actor for one of your videoclip? If yes, who?
Id love for Martin Scosesse to direct a video of ours, a true genius behind the camera

If you could make a cover, which song would you choose and why?
I think we would probably go for something a bit different to what we normally would do, we recently did a cover of 'you cant hurry love' by the supremes

Which dead artist would you love to come back to life?
It would have to be john lennon, id love to hear what material he would release in his later years

What was the 1st ever gig you went to? And what was the 1st ever cd/vinyl you bought?
The first Cd i bought was 'Nevermind' by Nirvana and the first big gig we all went to was to see was The Stereophonics, great gig

What will you do if tomorrow, music will be ban of our life and you'll have to choose another career?
Adam would have to be something creative, maybe something to do with Film, Ian would like to do something in art or design or maybe photography

In France, we have, every 21st of June and for more than 29 years now, a National day called "La fête de la musique". On that day, every single musician can go in the street and play his art. This is free and everybody is welcome to play or listen and this is a very festive day.  I know that several others countries have "took" this idea now and do that too. What do you think of that? And would you like the British governement do the same and declare the 21th of june, a national day for music?
I would love that to happen but over here we do have a lot of live music playing so you can always go out and see a band performing, but it would be cool to play in the streets and discover what it going on in your aria

Do you have a special message for your fans/supporters?
Just a big thankyou to them for travelling all over to watch us play we really do appreciate your dedication ....and spread the word!!!!
