HIATUS

A special post just to explain why I haven't write since last summer.

I have decided to put this blog on hiatus because I feel like I am writing for nobody. I know it's probably not true and also that I shouldn't care of what others think but that's it.

I re-opened this blog years ago because I wanted to help promote most of my friends who are talented musicians but even if I wrote a lot, followed them to gigs and festivals, some of them have split, some are still playing and some others have just stopped being a musician...

One day I saw some of my friends discovering 2 or 3 bands months or years after I wrote about them. I then realised that even my own friends didn't care about what I wrote and this was probably the start  of this "should I still write or not" -"do I really help them", etc questions...

I love writing and promoting the musicians I love and listening to their new sound and then seeing them live with their new material.
The fact that seeing some of those musicians being awful with me even when I was always there to support them, is not helping too.

I wanted to write about Kav's last video, SuperEvolver last EP (with Dan from The Darkness), share Amy Wyke 's last acoustic video, I was thrilled to review Kid Kasio's new album, to introduce 2/3 new bands formed by members of bands I already told about, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.... But why write if nobody cares...

So for the moment, this blog is on hiatus and I don't know if I will write again soon...

A huge thank you to the few who read me and who might have shared some of my posts...

See you Later...

Strawberry Fields Festival 2014

first of all, I'd like to thank Baz Randall, The festival organisers and Mab. This review will, literally start with my travel from Paris, France to get to the Festival in Heather!
I didn't went to the festival last year cos I was not fan of the line up but this year's line up was brilliant (just my opinion).

You can find all the pictures I took HERE.

Friday 8 August 2014, On the road to Leicester:

What an epic start of the day!!! As a being a foreigner with poor money, I took the Eurostar todayninstead of yesterdzy and, oh my luck, I usually take the 8.13 train but it was not running today so I had to wait for the 09.13 that will arrive in London at 10.39. But with my legendary luck and despite of the fact that the Eurostar before mine was inexistant, this stupid train was late! And I was already considering missing my Midlands train to Leicester and buy a new ticket ( I was already writing the letter to Eurostar in my head to ask them for a refund because it would have been their fault not mine!). BUT it was "only" 15 minutes late so I just had to walk very fast on the platform ( saying 50 times "sorry", "pardon", "merci"..........) and do the same in the train station! ( it was the day that all the groups choose to travel!). I finally succeed to do that in 3 minutes ( a record I guess) , I collected my tickets and goŕfew minutes to buy something to eat and drink and then relax for an hour (again). Luckily, the person who booked the seat next to mine didn't come so I could keep my small suitcase with me!
When in Leicester, I'll have to run accross the town to get the bus that will take me to the Charnwood hotel where I'll throw my suitcase on the bed, plug my phone and then leave again for the SFF.

15.00 at the Charnwood Arms :

Waiting for the taxi to pick me up outside of the hotel, shouldbe on time for the acts I checked on the list. The hotel is quite nice, the room is in a chalet so it's like I have  my own little house. It was the 1st time I took a bus to get "that far" from Leicester and to be honest, I felt ridiculousnto be scared to miss my stop and even the deiver had a look at me cos he saw that I wasn't sure!!! Stupid Parisian!!!!

15.15 at SFF:
just arrived on the site and 2 girls were in front of me with massives bags for the camp site. The security girl saw me and my small bag and I could feel that she was happy to let her colleague with the 2 girls while she tok car of my little bag!
Here it is, I have my bracelet on and the rain start to fall! I left my wellies at the hotel cos I was sure it won't be raining!!! :(

15.30:
I go to the main stage where CLUBS should play in a minute but the rain is here to stay so everybody is waiting under the bar tent and that's where I find Guy from SuperEvoler, telling me tht the band I want to see is his mates!
After few long minutes, the rain finally staop and CLUBS can come on stage. I've quickly heard few bits from them and really liked   To be honest, I think they should deserve to play a bit later cos they would totally find a "new" public there. I truly like their smooth indie rock. The voice of the singer is quite perfect on every songs. The few people that are here are really enjoying the band and their music so maybe next year they'll be there again!

16.00
As I walk quickly to the Jam Stage, I think Im going to catch RAGLANS 's set but find just a little duet of guys with an electric guitar. When I arrived, they were playing "use somebody" by KoL, following by another cover of KoL. I, then, realise that the singer-guitarist has the same voice of Caleb from KoL. So the cover are a good choice! As I grab my camera, they swap places and guitar but sing anoth cover and that where they say that they were just filling in!!! They were Rob and Don from the little tent where you can play different games with some cardboax. I can see on their vans that they are from The Decade Runners
Waiting for the next set to come on the main stage, I walk through the field to see how the festival looks different from the year before and walk in the dance arena, the stage for the DJ is gorgeous but he's dancing alone!!!

16.28 on the main stage:
It's time for GEORGE BARNETT, he is a solo artist sharing the stage wirh his musicians. He is giving us an enjoyable and enlightening pop. After the 3rd song, Im just thinking that his joy could help bringing back the sun! Sometimes he is on the piano, sometimes up with the microphone but always really dancing. Another artist playing in front of 30 peoplebwhen he should be seducing 200! This young guy has got a lot of energy and he's sharing it with the few people who are listening to him! There is 3 little girls in front dancing and waving at him and he likes to wave back at them while singing, this is so cute! (im talking like a mum now!!!!!). I think that GEORGE BARNETT is my new "coup de coeur". I love his "electro-funk-pop"!

17.00 on the Jam Stage :
I wanted to see Storybooks because of their name but when I arrive, it's not them!!!  It's a band full of girls who is playing on the stage!!! I really those girls bands. This band seems to be totally into some punk-rock like the one I grew up with. They are amazing on stage, totally moving with the rhythm and I  adore their music but I'm not entirely fan of the singer's voice. She sometimes screams more than she sings...But just for the music, the 2 small girls with a big bass and a big guitar surrounding the singer with amazing red hair, they deserve to be seen.  This band is THE FRANKLYS who were filling up and who already played on the main stage earlier that day.

17.45 on the main stage:
Only wearing black clothes, here comes COVES, a 4 pieces with a lead girl. They're playing some psychedelic rock. The singer has a smooth and enlighten voice. I like how the orchestration melt with her voice. I also like how she can mix her voice to the guitarist's voice. It's really mind-blowing! There is a perfect harmony in this band as far as I can see after 4 songs.

After COVES, I want back on a walk to see the different Dance stage. Usually those ones are full after 6pm but not today. It seems that the public prefer the stage at the Orange Tree where MIDNIGHT WIRE are playing and I won't blame them! Myself, I'd rather like some good little folk to some Dance music except when I went to have fun with my mates and dance like a lunatic!
I already saw MIDNIGHT WIRE but not acoustic like this and that is brilliant, and the singer likes to joke with the public.

Something I love about this festival is that there is always lots of kids, and every year the "special kids" corner is getting bigger.  That's absolutely great. I don't know if the other festival in the UK are doing the same but I think it is a brilliant idea to let the kids be inside of the festival and to see them dancing in front of the stage and when they're fed up,  they just have to go to the "Octopussy Garden"! The next big thing should be " bring your dog" to a festival! My dog would love all this space!! :p

18.50 on the main stage:
Another band with a girl as the lead singer. But different type of music (while Im writing that  COVES are right next to me). FINDLAY are playing some heavy rock and when you see the singer you can't imagine that this is their type of music. There, the public is dancing and jumping. Ooooh the good good rock. This singer is petite but with a huge voice that we could call "à la Amy Winehouse". I bet she could sing everything. Talking about that, the heavy rock changes for some funky rock. There is a guy who have some amazing country dance skills. He was already moving his cowboy body during COVES. The singer also plays a guitar almost as big as her! While I am watching her dancing, I realize she is barefoot, oh cold cold little feet!!!!!
The only thing that truly  annoys me when you watch a band on the main stage is that between each songs you can hear the DJ mixing in the bar tent...
But during the songs, you can't, fortunately, hear the dance above the rock. That would be a very bad mix.

19.35:
I don't know what happened to the Jam Stage but everytime I came there was no band or the band playing was not the one announced. There is a band right now but I couldn't say (for now) if it's JAWS or another. But it's an indie band and I am not keen of the voice of the singer and the music is too slow (for me)...
I succeed to get into the Orange Tree Tent to see THE SIMPLETONES who's only singing and "beat boxing", that's not my cup of tea but it's almost relaxing between a set of rock and a set of dance ( yes I keep walking in the dance tent to see the DJs are still dancing on their own). They had an awesome public, very enthusiastic. I had to leave after 2 songs cos that's too much for me but this guys are talented in their type of music.

20.10 on the main stage:
THE TWANG are on the main stage, so are their fans. This 5 pieces band with 2 singers is really popular and I think it's because they're playing a very effective pop rock and the 2 singers make it even more special. Why get only singer when you can get 2 great ones! Of course, I do have a favorite one but I can't imagine the band without the other...so... One is also more a rapper when the other is singing (Gosh I love his voice) . They succeed to make the public dance even on the slower songs. The band linked the songs with a smile and a "Ta very much" after each ones. Big up to the drummer who has to drum with only one foot cos he had a scooter's incident in Greece. There seems to have more people now than earlier in the day, probably cos it's a friday and not everybody can have day off. I bet the party starts now for a lot of people with the (great) TWANG while for me, it will be the end of the party (of the friday)...

Saturday 9 August,

13.50,
I am back at the same place I was yesterday, waiting for the taxi outside of the hotel. What can I say about Friday at SFF? I was well please with all the bands I could see despite despite of the mess with the Jam Stage.
When I arrive at the festival, I see that one of the guy (Rob) I saw yesterday has created a new stage with a cardboard called "BuskStage" and he is here playing some songs alone with his guitar.

14.15 on the main stage:
After getting a fresh orange juice (yup, I don't drink too much alcohol at festivals...), I was texting when YOUNG KATO comes on stage. It's a 6 pieces band with a singer who might be famous for his haircut!!! ;)
I didn't know them as I like to keep the surprise for the bands I didn't know already. They're playing a really effective pop rock with bits of electro. Very danceable. The voice of the singer can go through difference tones and is always perfect. The public seems to love them and I can even see the ones sleeping, waking up and pay attention to them.

14.55 on the Jam stage:
I didn't planned to really see the band of the Jam stage today as almost all the bands I want to see are on the main stage but between bands, Im going to see the full girls band who's playing on the jam stage. They are THE MAY BIRDS. I like some folk when it's like this, good music and good voice and they're the kind of bands who like to speak with the public.

15.05 back on the Main stage:
THE STRUTS are playing at the moment and they are killing it!!! I personally love this band, first because of their charismatic singer who is, for me, a mix between Mick Jaggers, Noel Fielding and the whole of The Darkness! If you love The Darkness and don't know The struts, then go buy their album right now! You won't regret it. They're playing a very strong and effective glam rock. I soooo wanted to see them live once and this is the d-day! We need more bands like this one! We need bands who make people dance like this, we need lead singers as charismatic as Luke. The poor boy almost broke his voice in the joy! I wish they would play more and I think I am not the only one but as the others were running late, they had to play a shorter set. Let's face it, that was a brilliant "short" set! They will be on tour in November, don't miss them!

15.35 on the Jam Stage:
I go inside the tent to see who is the band I can hear from the main stage! They are HEAVYBALLS and they are playing a sort of ska rock quite effective (yes, I think "effective" is THE word for me!). I can't listen to the whole set as it's under the tent and there is someone smoking next to me anywhere I go! :(
They have a group of fans dancing like lunatics right in front of them and screaming. Their ska punk rock is quite attractive and the loud voice of the singer makes it even better!!

15.50 on the Main stage:
LOSTALONE comes on stage with a heavy metal rock. They are a 3 pieces band with the habitual long hair bassist. Sadly for them, the singer has to ask to the public to get up cos almost everyone is sitting just watching them. I personally love this kind of music (as I made my musical education with Nirvana, Green Day, The Clash and Sex Pistols!)! The rest of the set is less loud so the public seems to be more into it. For the song "Crusade", the lead singer/guitarist take a "special" guitar and tries to make the public jealous. The extra part of the guitar seems to play loud like a bass. Im not a specialist so I couldn't tell you the exact name of this guitar! I think that, sometimes, the singer push too much on his voice during some chorus... This guys should try to participate (if they didn't do it already!) to the Hellfest in France, I am sure they would find some success in this festival.
During their set, a guy saw his friend stole one of his shoes and throw it on stage, and then, being warned by the stage manager that he will be ban if it happens again! Oooopsy!!!

The next band on the main stage will be Dexters and Im not moving during the change of stage cos I don't want to miss them at all! I already talked about them many many many months ago and I always wanted to see them live. (They were behind me during Lostalone's set and I was starstruck!!!)

Oooh well, just a quick jump to the octopus garden where I was sure to find my mate's Mab (from SuperEvoler) with wife and little daughter Ivy (who now speaks a perfect french ;) ) and then DEXTERS was on!
I am spending the 2 first songs taking pictures and filming, the groupie in me was awake! I won't say that they are perfect on stage as I would sound like a groupie again... :p But they're quite good. I always wanted to do a review of their album but I never did because my day job always take me all my energy and I always regret... Dexters are really into indie pop rock. The one that makes you sing and dance with them, They are quite popular now but, and I don't know why, they never been on the cover of the NME (this journal that apparently decide who need to be famous or not), I want them at next year Rock en Seine in Paris. Does this show you that I enjoyed their set and love their music?

17.40:
After a little walk till the Orange Tree Tent where I finally bought a real ale and saw James Holt, I came back to the main stage where it started to rain for THE FAMILY RAIN!!! As a respectable girl, I needed to fall in love with someone and it's THE FAMILY RAIN! I want to marry this guys and their music! Despite of their name, they succeed to stop the rain with their alternative indie rock.

18.45:
CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN are on. I knew them, I heard them but I never notice they were so young! If you already saw a picture of Ewan McGregor on a drumkit, well it's theirs! Behind all this hairs, there are 4 guys playing a loud rock. I am a bassist (well kind of) and I love when the bass is so loud and that's what you find in some of their tunes. They're not fantastic but they're good at their stuff. Despite of that, the public seems to love them. They, apparently, are the new the new number 1 band in the heart of the young. The front is more young blonde girls than hairy men! ;) I am not fan of them but I did enjoy their set and so is the public.

The following band is THE RIFLES. I already saw them once and quite enjoyed, I, also, got all of their album so they don't have to win my heart. You might know Luke, the bearded guitarist with a hat. They're playing tunes after tunes under the flow of the positives whistles from the public. It's getting darker so the lights are now on on the stage and are playing with the rhythm.  No wrong notes, they're still as good as they used to be, they put their last album on Pledge Music and it worked, they could produced their own new album thanks to their fans and they are thanking them with great tunes! The Rifles is not the type of bands who likes to talk a lot between songs but that doesn't seem to bother the audience who is asking for the next song. The voice of Joel, the singer, is a light as on the albums. Lots of good guitar's riffs.

The next and last band to play this Saturday is the very excellent REVEREND AND THE MAKERS; If you heard about or just about Jon the Rev, you know that you can't hate them! They are making everyone jump and sing, they're like a happy virus! Despite of the come back of the rain, everybody is here dancing . Sadly there is always some idiots in the audience but Jon sees them and tells them what he thinks of their behavior and honestly, you have to give him some respect because you can feel that he is a respectable man. He sings his tunes after tunes and the public is quite enthusiastic from the beginning till the end of the gig. I already saw REVEREND AND THE MAKERS in Paris and only had great memories, the Rev knows how to talk to the public "if you're not jumping then you're an asshole", if that doesn't make you move! ;)

This is the end of this Saturday for me, Im not going to see the Dance Arena or the set that play till 2 am. Im not that kind of night bird, well I could stay up all night but for rock'n'roll!!
So back at the hotel and see you tomorrow!

Sunday 10 August 2014
I wanted to be at SFF for 13.00 but the taxi couldn't be there before 13.00 so Im waiting at the bar with a pear cider when I see some of THE KOO guys! Damn, they are staying in the same hotel as me!
The weather is really awful today so I am wearing my wells and my small rain coat... Youpi... I hope that everybody will be able to play! :/ In France, the festival would be cancel with a weather like that! I am really looking forward to see LIFE IN FILM (who I totally adore and haven't seen for like 2 years!), The KOO of course, SIMON and OSCAR from Ocean Colour Scene and EXIT CALM more than anything else. And the big HOWARD MARKS will be there too!

13.05:
And I am finally in the taxi, that I share with Paul (from The Koo) and his mate! When we arrive at the festival, it is still raining. I can see the last songs of THE ASSIST, this poor guys had to perform in front of few people who stand under the rain. I can't describe their set as I saw 1 song and the half of an other but good on them and on the few people to stay despite of the rain. After them, I can see the sound check of BLOSSOM in the Jam Stage. I don't think I'll get time to see them later but they don't seem bad.

Under the Orange Tree Tent, I see NILE MCGREGOR (yeah like Ewan) playing acoustic and having fun going through the tables. This guy has a powerful voice.  I met him several time in the field since friday, he was always running from a stage to another and I really thought he was just a spectator!

14.05:
Back to the main stage where HIDDEN CHARM plays a sort of 70s rock. They remind me a little bit of MOVE ... The rain has stopped and the sun is back for this 5 young pieces band who plays a smooth rock. I am not really fan of their sound but, fortunately some of their fans are there. The guitarist (with denim jacket) is really really good. I truly liked their last song because it was closer to 70s I love. Very rock and danceable.

Geek part: I spend the 30 minutes between HIDDEN CHARMS and THE KOO at the only spot where my 3G (why no 4G!) works to answer to some emails I had because the wifi in my hotel room is not working!!! Shitty thing!!

15.03:
THE KOO are on stage. Starting with the huge voice of Arnold. He just has to talk to warn the whole festival that they are playing. After the 1st song, as the people stayed sit, he literally jump in the public to make them stand and dance, and finally stayed just behind the barrier to sing. Honestly even if you don't like their type of music, you have to admit that they know how to make the public move and laugh! It's the 1st time I see them live as they are quite a young and I see that the guitarist and bassist are really good at their stuff. I knew Paul only with KAROVA, his old band, and i think his voice is different in this band, more sing and less rap can be good. You can hear the magic fingers of Asa on the keyboard. They finished their set with their most famous song. I already said that I usually hate rap songs but they know the % of rap to add over the music. Even if the others have left the stage after the last song, Arnold stays on it  and tales his badman story.

15.30:
THE MERRYLEES are on the Jam Stage. They seem really young but they are playing a good folk rock. The singer have a really strong and clear-cut voice. The public seems hypnotize by this young 4 pieces. I am sure this young lads could go far. The singer is playing on a beautiful white Gretsch (I bet my brother would want it!). They remind me of the young Beatles (Not that I know them!!)

Outside the weather is so bad that almost all the little shops in tents have closed or have left. The Octopussy Garden is empty and there is no queue for the food. The wind is so hight that some of the huge poles of the massive Jam Stage (that is under a tent) are "flying". Almost all of the public is under the Orange Tree Tent... That doesn't loo k good for LIFE IN FILM who will be on stage on the main one in few minutes.

But while I was writing that, the drum kit has been removed of the stage following my all of the others instruments and amps because the wind is making thing too dangerous with the main stage...

This is the end of the festival.... I am so sad about that but also glad that the organizers don't try to keep on by thinking of their benefits instead of the security of the artists and the public...

If I can give any advices to the SFF organizers (only by my experience of other festivals in France and England), I think they shouldn't start the gig before 13.00... At every other festival I went, the doors open at 12.30 and the gigs start after 13.00 . I think nobody is really into seeing gigs at 10 or 11.00, especially if they stayed up till 2am dancing with the DJ! Of course, it would mean to get less artists but that also means less money spend... Im probably the only one thinking that but I always thought that the Tokken were a bad idea. I would have drink more if it was not with Tokken this year.  There should be a water fountain somewhere where people could wash their hands...
This is only my opinion and the things I could see in difference festivals...

Amy Wyke ; Hummingbird -Live at the gibson studio, London.

I haven't talk about Amy Wyke for a while now, not that I didn't like her songs anymore but because she was very busy working on her music and getting some new tunes ready. She did few gigs but spend most of her time to write her new songs (music and lyrics).
Now, she's ready, 2 weeks ago, she went to the Gibson Studio in London and made a video for her song "Hummingbird".
A sweet and smooth acoustic version of Hummingbird is available to hear on the Youtube channel of Amy  (with a lot of other great videos!! :)  )

But don't worry, I won't make you search for this video, here it is:

And here is some pictures taken during this day at the Gibson Studio: (All pictures courtesy of Amy Wyke (so please ask her before using them for anything, thank you.)

The KOO

Sometimes after the splits of several bands, some members decide to reunite to create a new band! That's what happened to FC-20  and KAROVA .
In The Koo, you can find members of those bands and others. Most of them are from Camden (London), one is from Syston and another from Lincolnshire.

The Koo's members are :

Arnold who tells the tales
Paul who says how it is
Scotty who has and give the beats
Al on guitar
George on Bass
Asa behind the keys.

They created this band cos they were not going in the direction they wanted with the old bands, now they're all thinking the same and want the same in music. The band already played several gigs to introduce themselves to the british audience before getting their first big appearance on the main stage at The Strawberry Fields Festival on the sunday evening.
The band is currently in studio with Steve Proctor and a song will be released very soon from this session.

If you love the Stone Roses then you should have a listen to this band.

You can find them on :

KAV

One year ago, Kav was introducing the videoclip for his song Dirty Reject featuring Rick Genest aka Zombie boy aka Rico the Zombie

In April, Kav announced that his next single was featuring in the teaser of the Aaron Paul's new movie Decoding Annie Parker. In this short video you can see Aaron Paul dancing on this song.

On May the 7th, Kav was playing a gig in West Hollywood at The Viper Room, yes the famous Viper Room, with Bonehead (ex-Oasis) on guitar,  Alex Lipinsky (a young singer/songwriter/musician from Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset) and with Aria  (the singer/guitarist and keyboardist of  Some Go Haunting (a young band from LA).
I never been to LA or West Hollywood or anywhere in the US, but I know that playing the Viper Room is something every single musicians should live once in their life!

AND today was the D-Day for the release of the video for the very new single by KAV, the one you saw Aaron Paul dancing on. Now you can dance on Dance in A Panic too!
In this video you can see and feel the influence of the MODS in Kav's life. I must admit that this song always makes me want to dance a twist!!!!

Strawberry Fields Festival 2014

Last year, I was a tiny bit disappointed by the line up for this festival, where I use to go to since their very first weekend in 2010. And because of that, I went in Leicester at the same period but stayed in Leicester and didn't went to the festival. Sadly.
But this year's line up is is back to be as good as it was. Of course, my favorite bands from Leicester won't play because they stopped ,or more accurately the industry made them stop... :(

But as you'l be able to see on the picture below, some other bands I love and support for many years will be there so this year's festival should be as awesome as it always been.

In August, in Heather, you will be able to listen to Dexters, The Rifles, Reverend & The Makers , Life in Film, The Koo, Twisted Wheel, Simon Fowler and Oscar Harrison from OCEAN COLOUR SCENE, The Family Rain among others on the Main Stage and soon the Strawberry Jam Stage will be announced and this is, usually, where I spend most of my time during the festival!!! (Well, this year it seems that it will be in front of the main stage!!

Saviour - The Narrows-

They said they will be back for Halloween and they didn't lie!

The Narrows are releasing a new single called Saviour, today, day of the trick or treaters. You can download it on their band camp  just by naming your price (be nice, don't put only 0,1£ !!!)

Am I the only one who can hear an influence of The Adams Family in it??
Also I find this song more "rock" than ever!
